Most cars and trucks brake systems comprise of the brake pedal, master cylinder, steel brake lines, calipers, wheel cylinders, brake rotors, brake drums, brake pads brake shoes and other hardware. Disc brakes have a piston seal in the calipers that retract the piston and release the pads from the rotors.

Drum brakes have several springs that release the rear brakes by pulling the shoes from the drum. Maintaining your brake system normally starts at the brake pads. Depending on how often you drive, the type of vehicle you drive and the driving conditions you're normally in, you should have your brakes checked by Auto Clinic according to the vehicles user manual, to make sure that your brake pads and rotors are in the right working condition.
